Description
There is evidence for one medieval market at High Wycombe. It was first recorded in 1222 and was held by Alan Basset by prescriptve right, and was described as 'mercatum'. On 3rd February 1223, in a dispute between Felicis, abbess of Godestowe and Alan Basset, it was noted that Basset took 4d annually from the 'common market' at Wycombe. In March 1226, in a final concord between the burgesses of Wycombe and Alan Basset, Alan granted them 'the whole borough of Wycumbe with rents, markets and fairs (the days of which were not given) and all other things [pertaining] to the borough. It was also noted that 'the fair of the beasts is to remain each year in the field of Alan where formerly it used to be'. On 24th June 1237, King Henry III made an 'inspeximus' of this final concord. On 12th June 1285, King Edward I inspected and confirmed the 'inspeximus'.
There is evidence for two further fairs at High Wycombe. Both were granted by charter. The first was to be held on the vigil and feast of St Margaret, which fell on the 20th of July. It was granted 13th May 1229 by King Henry III to leprous brethren of the hospital of St Margaret [High Wycombe hospital of St Gilbert and St Margaret]. It was to be held at the hospital, and a mandate was sent to the sheriff of Buckingham on 12th May 1229. the second fair was to be held on the vigil and feast of the Transformation of Thomas, which fell on the 7th of July. It was granted on 18th June 1239, by King Henry III to brethren of the hospital of St John, Wycombe [High Wycombe hospital of St John the Baptist], and was to be held at the hospital (B1).
