Description

A medieval market to be held on a Tuesday was granted between 1227-72 by King Henry III to Joan late the wife of Hugh de Sanford. On 12th February 1367, it was stated that King Henry III had granted a Tuesday market by charter to Joan late the wife of Hugh de Sanford, but that Joan and her heirs never used the market. King Edward III therefore granted the Tuesday market to Thomas de Mussenden, King's sergeant, tenant of the manor. A fair was also mentioned in the grant, to be held on the vigil and feast of Assumption, which fell on the 15th August. This fair was also granted to Thomas de Mussenden (B1).
