Description

There is evidence for one medieval market at Beaconsfield. The market was granted by charter and was to be held on a Tuesday. The charter was dated 6th February 1255 and was granted by King Henry III to Richard, earl of Cornwall, and was to be held at the manor of Beaconsfield.
There is evidence for one medieval fair at Beaconsfield. The fair was to be held on the vigil and feast of the Ascension. The fair was granted by charter on 10th May 1269, by King Henry III to the abbess and nuns of Burnham. On 23rd April 1414, it was stated that the abbess and convent of Burnham had held a fair on the vigil and feast of Ascension fromo time immemorial, without any grant from any king. King Henry V therefore granted the abbess and convent on the vigil and feast of Ascension. In view of the 1269 grant, this appears to have been a misconception regarding the origin of the fair (B1)
