Description
There is evidence for one medieval market at Aylesbury, which was held by prescriptive right. It was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as having a toll worth of £10.
There is evidence for two medieval fairs at Aylesbury. One was held by prescriptive right , and was recorded in 1227. No feast is given, but the grant of 1239 (below) mentions the 'old fair on the feast of St Ostyth in the Summer', held on the 3rd of June, which was to be retained. It is possible that it was this fair that was recorded in 1227. The second market was granted by charter on 30th May 1239, by King Henry III to John fitz Geoffrey, and was to be held on the feast of Ostyth, which fell on the 7th October each year. The fair was to be held at the manor (B1).
