Description

Watching brief carried out in December 2008 during groundworks for building conversion identified the foundation trench for the 19th century extension adjoining the west gable wall of the stable. A posthole 0.4m in diameter and 0.6m deep may have related to a possible earlier farm building on the site. Examination of the roof timbers of the stable revealed an incription carved into the horizontal tie-beam of the central truss which reads 'Mr william Couper Built this Stable In ye year 1734 Charles Russell Carpenter'. See report for detail (B2).
