Opened on 1 July 1901; a passing loop was provided. Photo of station and tunnel (B2).
On 10th March 1913 the station was gutted by fire in an arson attack by militant suffragettes, destroying the stationmaster's office, the parcels office, the porters room, the general waiting room and the ladies' waiting room (B3).
