Description

In addition to the series of 5 TPs dug away from the Leckhampstead Road, TP 36 and 37 were located immediately next to the hedgeline. Both produced significant quantities of medieval pottery from undisturbed deposits. In both cases, the levels of pottery recovery is large enough to postulate occupation at this point. Critically, two sherds of Early-Middle Saxon handmade wares (AD400-800) came from TP 37. This material has not been recovered elsewhere in the village, although pre-conquest material has been recovered from both Hillberry and the school. A pattern thus appears to be emerging of a very dispersed settlement pattern now subsumed below the modern nucleated village (B1).
