Description
The brick foundations of a building approximately 5m wide x 15m long lie under the present Vancouver Lodge's garden, and extend over part of the driveway in front of the house. A building on this site is recorded by RCHM in 1913, said to be 17th century. The present building dates from 1801, but may incorporate part of a stone wall on the line of the early foundations on the garden front. No earlier fabric survives. A building on this site is claimed to be the residence of Launcelot (Capability) Brown whilst under gardener to the Stowe Estate, 1741-1750. The kitchen gardens lay in front of the present building. It is also claimed to be an ale-house at the cross roads of an earlier road running up to where Stowe House was later situated (B1).
