Description

The building is a two-bay cottage with a side lobby entrance at one end, leading to the main kitchen-hall, thus is a standard 17th-18th century plan. The firebeam and spinebeams appear to be original. The cottage is clearly depicted on the 1881 OS survey as parcel No.152, and is approximately 18m long, with a small outbuilding on the ESE gable. It seems that the present modern extension at this end replaced an earlier structure of more than 2 bays. The skewing of the alignment may fossilise an ealier line of the road which probably took an imprecise and braided line out of the widened area in front of the manor house when May Cottage was built. The line is maintained by the adjoining modern bungalow, Hurst Farm, but which appears on the 1881 OS map (B1).
