Description
Located on the SW side of The Square, No.2 is set back with a small front garden. The house consists of two bays, two storeys and a large continuous outshut at the rear which was removed in early 2004. It is brick built, painted at the front, with the first floor of Flemish Bond with flred headers at the rear, underbuilt with plain red scantle-marked brick. The building has a tiled roof. The building is reputed to have originally been a barn, converted to two small dwellings in the 19th century. The lack of evidence for early domestic use tends to confirm this, especially as the chimeny is of later brickwork. The shape and onstruction of the centre truss suggests a date in the 17th century rather than later, as th eprincipal rafters are well-formed and more in the nature of blades. There is no evidence of their being reused. It is presumed to have been constructed as an adjunct to either Verendale or the Bull and Butcher Inn (B1).
No. 2 The Square, between the Bull & Butcher and Verendale, is a small painted brick cottage with an unusally steep slate roof. The windows and porch are modern, but the building is still recognisable as an important and visually prominent historic building. (B2)
