Description

Undated woodland boundary features identified during walkover survey carried out by Northants Archaeology in January 2009. The woodland boundary is defined by a bank and ditch which encloses the entire wood; in places an additional internal bank was found. 5 copice boundaries comprising bank and ditch earthworks were recorded, mostly with internal banks 1m - 2m wide and up 0.4m high and external steeply-sloping ditches 1.5m - 2.5m wide and up to 0.8m deep. At least two phases of woodland and coppice boundary changes were noted: an earlier woodland pale defining the southern edge of the wood (Feature 1) survived as a bank and ditch aligned E-W and visible for 398m, the ditch measuring between 2m and 6m wide and 0.4m deep and the bank 2m wide and up to 0.2m high; there was also evidence for changes to the SE boundary of Coppice 5. There is documentary evidence for fluctuations in the size of the wood, with the loss of 13ha of woodland on the north between 1810 and 1885 (B1).
