- HOLLOW WAY (18th Century - 1700 AD to 1799 AD)
Description
Earthwork hollow way surviving in trees to SE of Marlow Hill, reputedly on former line of High Wycombe to Marlow road which was moved to its current alignment in early to mid 18th century (B1).
Permission granted to Lord Shelburne in ?1750s to re-route the road. Diversion of the Marlow Road possibly part of the landscaping works carried out by Brown after 1761. John Phibbs notes that the linear earthwork (a substantial east-facing scarp) presumably surviving from the old road runs right up to the top of the park but has presumably been heavily landscaped. The road alignment appears to have been retained by Brown to form an outer riding (B2).
