Description

Trial trenching carried out by Archaeological Solutions in October and November 2007 identified a small number of very shallow plough-damaged features within Trench 13. An undated 1m X 0.7m pit, undated E-W aligned narrow ditch or gully 0.39-0.5m wide, and a 0.59m wide, flat-bottomed ditch aligned NW-SE with a single sherd of Late Iron Age pottery from the fill were recorded. The pottery sherd was abraded, so may be residual, although the comparitively large size of the sherd might suggest otherwise. The report suggests that the features may all be of Late Iron Age or possibly early Roman date. See report for detail (B1).
A single gully, 0.74m wide and 0.24m deep, in the western area of the field contained an iron 'latch lift'. Area 2, south of the moat, revealed two parallel ditches forming a N-W to S-E aligned trackway, c 3.2 wide. A single sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from the eastern ditch (B2).
