Description

Excavation of 37 test pits carried out by AOC Archaeology in 2002 in conjunction with a watching brief during the removal of a concrete slab, resulted in the identification of two undated pits and two undated post-holes in test pit 3. The largest pit was circular, with near vertical sides and slightly rounded base and was 1.1m in diameter and 1.14m deep. The other pit was oval, with steep sides and rounded base and was 1m X0.7m and 0.35m deep. The post holes were sub-circular, with sloping sides and rounded bases, 0.3m and 0.4m in diameter and 0.08m deep. All features were cut into the chalk bedrock and had similar fills, suggesting they were contemporary. No dateable finds were recovered. Elsewhere on the site post-medieval terracing was visible in test pits 6 and 11, and traces of plough furrows were identified in a number of test pits (B1).
An intermitent watching brief carried out by AOC Archaeology between December 2005 and October 2006 during groundworks found extesive truncation across large parts of the site (B2).
Additional trial trenching and excavation carried out by Wessex Archaeology in May and June 2008 in vicinity of test pit 3 failed to identify any additional features other than a probable solution hollow (B3).
