Description

Locally listed. 19th century, colour washed bricks, Welsh slate roof. 3 storeys, cornice. 19th century shop windows. Upper storeys have 2 sashes with glazing bars in reveals; wide modern casement on right of first floor (B1).
In the early 20th century the premises were occupied by the Frogmore Coffee Tavern [no 12] and by Popp's newsagents [no 14]. Jacob Popp was persecuted by the local authority for daring to open his shop on Sundays. From 1901 to 1908, he appeared in court every Monday, where he was fined a nominal sum for the offence. Popp cashed in on the publicity and issued humerous cards with cartoons and verses telling his story (B2).
