Description

Archaeological geophysical survey, evaluation trial trenching, excavation and a watching brief were undertaken on the Taplow-Dorney water pipeline.
Very little was identified in the geophysical survey or trial trenching along the proposed route of the pipeline (B1 & B3).
A number of features dating to the Late Bronze Age-Early Iron Age were identified at Site B. A ditch was identified in Area 1 (most northerly area) and a ditch and pit in Area 4 (further south). Area 5 (near the railway) contained a pit and post-holes of this date (B4). NGR to corner of Areas 4 and 5.
Site B intercepted at least two late Bronze Age ditches, and there may have been others without dating evidence from the excavated sections. The evidence cannot confirm whether they were out of use by the time Site A was occupied, although it would be reasonable to expect some fields in the area to relate to the agricultural regime of the settlement (B5).
