Description

Archaeological geophysical survey, evaluation trial trenching, excavation and a watching brief were undertaken on the Taplow-Dorney water pipeline.
Pits were identified in geophysical survey and evaluation (B1& B3). In excavation one oval pit located in Area 4, towards the south end of Site B near the railway, contained a small quantity of pottery (a single sherd weighing 6g) dating to the Late Neolithic period. It is considered likely that the pit is broadly contemporary with the pottery within it, given the unabraded nature of the sherd (B4).
Early Prehistoric activity identified towards the southern end of Site B consisited of four pits, dispersed along an 80m length of the site. The dating for these pits appeared secure, with none of this material appearing in association with later pottery. All four were filled with single deposits, two of which contained Middle Neolithic pottery, including one sherd with burnt food residues (B5).
