Description
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Albion Archaeology in March 2007 on the footprint of a new office building at the Thames Valley Police Headquarters identified an undated gully and a pit The features are on a different alignment to the early Romano-British field boundaries found in adjacent excavations, suggesting they are not contemporary. 4 plough furrows were also identified. See report for detail (B1).
During the subsequent watching brief a number of large pits were uncovered, possibly quarry pits. They were filled by flooding episodes and contained no artefacts. The remains of ridge and furrow were also recognised but again could not be dated. The quarrying has disturbed this area so that the archaeological deposits found just to the north in the grounds of Aylesbury High School do not continue in this area (B2).
