Description

Evaluation trial trenching on land at 5 Townsend, Haddenham uncovered a large number of archaeological features of late Saxon/medieval date comprising deposits such as pits and postholes, and boundary features such as ditches and gullies, and inlcuding limestone wall foundations indicative of above ground structures. Several post-medieval features were also identified (B1).
Excavation revealed Saxon pits, a series of medieval plot boundary ditches, gullies and pits and later post medieval drainage features and pits. The fieldwork sheds light on the sequence of development of the late Saxon and medieval village together with later abandonment before reuse in the post medieval period. Residual finds of Neolithic to Bronze Age flint, and pottery of Iron Age and Roman date indicate sporadic use of the site or its environs in these periods (B3).
