Description

Significant archaeological features were discovered in archaeological evaluation south of the White Hart carried out by Network Archaeology in July 2005 and November 2006. Evidence of riverside activities was not found but possible water management features were found in trenches 1,3, 7 and 8. Waterlogged conditions, including preserved wood, was found in the base of pits in trench 2. At least two property boundaries, possibly dating to the medieval period, were found. Cess/rubbish pits were found dating to the 16th century and onwards. One ditch may be the town ditch, and therefore date to the medieval and even Saxon period. Wall footings of a workhouse were also found. See report for detail (B1).
NGR to centre.
Medieval pottery of small, abraded fragments, was found within many if the features. Clearly a high degree of residuality across the whole site. Overall medieval pottery quantities are more indicative of low level domestic disposal and manuring scatters rather than of industrial or occupation activity. No systematic use of the site until the 15th or 16th century. The linear features described as posible town defences in the evaluation proved not to be by the excavation. During the 16th to 19th a series of pits were dug with the plots. Finds from these features were largely confined to post-medieval ceramics, bottle glass, clay pipe, and ceramic building material. At the north-west corner of the excavation area, there was a concentration of structural remains, including brick buildings, along with evidence of back-plot agriculture. This concentration spread south parallel with Bridge Street into the southern arm of the trench. Here a dense concentration of pits included a possible carpenter’s saw-pit. All dated to the post-medieval period (B3).
