Description

Watching brief and subsequent area excavation carried out in 2005 by Network Archaeology during construction of the Linslade Western Bypass identified an area of Middle to Late Iron Age activity including ditches, pits and a gully. The earliest features comprised a relatively deep E-W curvilinear ditch at least 35m long and three shallow depressions with evidence of burning. The fills of all these features contained hand-made Middle to Late Iron Age pottery, and one of the depressions also contained fragments of two crucibles. A similar depression further to the south was undated but contained a small quantity of cremated human bone. Late pre-Roman Iron Age activity comprised a right-angled ditched enclosure, probably a field boundary, with ditches aligned NE-SW (45m long) and NW-SE (50m long) and ranging from 0.25m to 0.7m deep, with associated shorter ditches, pits and at least one small gully. The fills contained large quantities of wheel thrown pottery, along with animal bone, a possible loomweight fragment and antler fragments. Several features contained fuel-ash slag and iron slag. It is suggested that the site was used being used for metal working and other craft activities on the perphery of a small settlement (which lay outside the excavated area). See reports for detail (B1-2).
