Description

Several trenches were dug to evaluate the impact of a gas pipeline between Marsh Gibbon and Hardwick. The majority of archaeological activity was found south of Lawn Farm at Grendon Underwood. In trenches 33, 58 and 61 a large amount of iron smelting slag was found. This came from the fills of ditches but wasn't in situ. The concentration was indicative of the presence of metal working in the vicinity and it is plausible that the ditches demarcated enclosures where such activities took place. The iron slag was typical of the bloomery iron smelting process. This is unusual as smithing slag is far more commonly recorded but was entirelay absent here, including no hammerscale. The approximate size and shape of furnaces could be estimated . Slagged furnace lining was found and showed that the top aperture of the furnace was 0.17m diameter. The diameter of the furnace bottoms corroborated this and these show narrow furnaces with vertical walls (B1).
Higher magnetic readings were generated on the magnetic susceptibility survey in this general area (B2).
