Description

An excavation of three trial trenches was undertaken by Albion Archaeology in October 2005 in advance of the construction of Buckingham Knowledge Centre. In the area next to the library there was over one metre of modern build-up and the original ground surface was truncated by 19th and 20th century activity. This includes pitting and the construction of substantial building foundations. The 19th century pit was probably for rubbish. The only feature thought to be earlier was a stony layer of redeposited natural that was tentatively interpreted as robbed-out remains of a limestone wall foundation, though it cannot be closely dated. Within the former magistrates court a lot of build up from the construction of that building was found, as well as the remains of an earlier 20th century building. One large pit was found, probably a quarry. The 1st Edition OS map shows no buildings along this part of Verney Close in 1885, but the Jeffreys map of 1770 does, suggesting there were buildings in the late 18th century that were demolished in the early 19th (B1).
