Description

Botelers (or Butler's) Manor was the seat of the Rufford family from c 1439 until 17th c, and is probably identical with the land held by Phillip le Boteler in the 14th c.
The farmstead within the moat dates from 1721 but there is evidence in the west gable and elsewhere of a somewhat older building. The moat has two islands, a type which is usually not older than the early 14th c. The northward extensions were fish-stews. MANOR OF THE ROFFARDS/ RUFFARDS C.1467-71. 'BOTELERS' WAS A SMALL MANOR IN NORTHALL (B2).
The condition of the house is poor and the moat much denuded. (3)
REPUTED MANOR. FIRST UNDER-TENANT RECORDED 1302 (B4).
NGR (SP 95471909) Moat (NR) (B5).

A now-dry or marshy sub-rectangular homestead moat at Butler's Farm measures overall, 150.0m NE-SW by 100.0m transversely. The arms are 10.0 to 14.0m in width. The enclosed area is subdivided into two unequal-sized islands, the northern extensions, which are probably fish stews, as suggested above, are complete and in fair condition, but the moat, S and E of the house has been mainly filled in and the remainder to the S and W has been incorporated into the gardens as an ornamental feature. The farmhouse is 18th c with substantial modernadditions and is of no architectural interest. Published 25" survey revised (B10).
