Description

A Late Glacial flint debitage scatter (i.e. production waste) was located in Test pit 129 and its hand excavated pit extension test pit 129a in Field 2 on the northern edge of the River Colne gravel island. The recovered worked flint, which consisted of 39 pieces including debitage, blades, flakes and a long blade core, was recovered from a mixed mid-grey silty sand and degraded peat layer directly above the natural gravel, at a depth of 0.4-0.5m. A shallow 'skirt' peat deposit, which is located around the northern edge of the gravel island, was identified in an adjacent test pit (596) sealing the artefact bearing deposit and was dated to 9300+/-50 BP (NZA-19306). This can be calibrated to 8730-8320 cal BC (B1).
