Description

5 boreholes undertaken by Atkins for the Environment Agency identified peat deposits surviving along the line of the River Colne. In Borehole 1 peat deposits were identified at 1.6 to 1.7m, separated by a 0.18 layer of clay and another peat deposit at 1.88m to 2.4m. Other peat or alluvium layers were identified in borehole 2 and 3. This demonstrates the potential for significant Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic deposits in this vicinity, which is important given the nearby Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites at the former Sanderson factory and Three Ways Wharf (B1).
