Description
A number of pits and depressions were recorded in woodland survey in Park Wood in 2006. Most are relatively small, probably localised excavations for extracting flint and gravel, or perhaps individual sarsen stones. There are, however, one or two larger pits, one of which measures approximately 25m in diameter and 2-3m in depth. There is very little evidence of spoil associated with these pits. There would be very little overburden and the flint and gravel encountered was presumably fully extracted. Clay for brick-making may have been extracted and this may explain the unusual size of the aforementioned pit (B8).
NGR to centre of distribution. Awaiting final report for more detailed mapping.
