- CHARCOAL BURNING PLATFORM (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD? to 1798 AD?)
Description
A woodland survey of early 2006 in Park Wood, Bradenham identified a number of possible charcoal burning platforms. At least one is fairly certain. A fallen beech tree previoulsy growing upon the platform incorporates within its root plate a solid horizon of charcoal up to 25cm thick. The level platform is roughly circular, measuring 9m in diameter, created by partially cutting into the natural slope and then throwing the soil forwards. Several similar platforms have been identified within the survey area, though there is no certainty. The best clue is to find charcoal at the base of the leaf mould covering the platform (B8).
NGR to most certain of these platforms. Awaiting final report for more detailed mapping.
