Description
In 1867 Hazell, Watson & Viney Ltd moved from London, first opening a country branch at California (see CAS 8043), then moving to the Tring Road site. Extensions were built in 1885, 1895, 1906, 1907 and 1911, establishing the company as Aylesbury's premier undertaking. In 1920, 1926, 1933 and 1935 further additions and enlargements occurred, followed by club premises and a theatre in 1936, and a new factory in 1937 (B1).
Hazell, Watson & Viney Limited; head office, 44 Great Queen Street, London WC2; letterpress printers, electro and stereo typers & book-binders, Tring Road; book-binding works, Bicester Road; hostel, 129 Tring Road. Hazell's Club, Britannia Street; Hazell's Sports Ground, Eagles Road (B4).
The new social club was opened in January 1936, replacing the earlier company social club and institute on Silver Street which had been built in 1883. The Britannia Street building was designed in a modernist style by Charles H Wright of Temple Street and built by Webster & Cannon. There was a boiler room and beer cellar in the basement; a reading room, library, billiards room, bar, kitchen, main hall with a stage, dressing rooms and lavatories on the ground floor; and boys' and girls' rooms, caretaker's accommodation, cloakerooms and lavatories on the first floor. The published article includes the architect's drawing of the front elevation of the new club building (B11).
