Description

Trial trenching and watching brief carried out between March and July 2006 by Archaeological Solutions in advance of proposed redevelopment of site and during lifting of concrete slabs revealed deep sequences of Medieval and post-medieval alluvial deposits along the course of the Bear Brook and evidence of management of the watercourse during the post-medieval period, culminating in the back-filling of an active channel and associated make-up layers possibly in the 17th century. Environmental sampling of the alluvial deposits concluded that pollen and spores were not well preserved. Molluscan and plant samples indicated that the Bear Brook was initially a shallow, mineral-rich, muddy bottomed stream with pond weed, with nearby grassland or meadow and a limited overgrowth of scrub and weeds. A second sample from a late medieval context suggested that it had accumulated during seasonal flooding. (See report for detail (B2).
