Description
Grade II. War Memorial, c. 1920. Portland stone. Cusped cross with crocket finials on tapered column of octagonal shaft with brattishing at capital. Octagonal plinth on stone step set on base of octagonal tiered concrete steps of 3 risers. Plinth with carved inscription on one face: 'JESUS SAID, GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS'. Carved names of World War I dead in flanking faces. Opposite side of plinth with later brass plaques on three faces: 'TO COMMEMORATE THE MEN FROM BRILL WHO DIED IN TWO WORLD WARS.' with names of the dead in flanking plaques. Sited in village green enclosed by stone bollards linked with chain (B1).
Portland stone cross mounted on a four step octagonal base surmounted by an octagonal plinth. Slender, tapering shaft and cross with finials. There are inscriptions on bronze plaques on three faces of the plinth. On the six 'o' clock face commemorates the men from Brill who died in two world wars. The 4.30 face inscibes the names of those who died in WW1 and WW2. The 7.30 face inscribes those who died in WW1. In good condition. Listed by DCMS in 2001 (B2).
