Description

Rectangular cropmark visible on AP crossing the county boundary. Evaluation trial trenching on Milton Keynes side of boundary confirmed complex as Roman in date, with stone foundation walls surviving in places (B1).

A settlement site/farmstead of Iron Age/Romano British date is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on the east bank of the Rover Great Ouse, Calverton, and centred at SP 77696 38517. There is an area of subcircular maculae, possible pits 2-3m in diameter in a group towards the river; other cropmarks are of linear features which may form part of larger enclosures or boundaries. A subrectangular enclosure, 16x18m, in size is visible between these with possible ring ditches (approximately 15m across) and enclosures to the west. The area mapped as part of this survey was not included in the existing record, which was not visible on aerial photographs and nothing shows on lidar visualisations. Land use appears to have been grass since 2000 and no further cropmarks are visible. Underlying geology is Great Oolite Limestone overlain by River Terrace Gravels. Similar features along the gravel terraces along the river have been recorded to the north and the south of this site, along both sides of the river (see MBC13629, MMK6215 (ring ditch), MMK6204 (pit alignment), MNN164346 MBC5865/MNN328 – records in Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire HERs). The western side of the river has been extensively quarried. (3-6)
