Description

15th century timber-framed building, altered in 16th century, formerly listed grade II+, delisted in 1989. Listing description: C15 building of 2 storeys, heightened mid C16 and since altered. Colour washed roughcast on brick nogged timber frame; old tiled roof. 3 storeys, east front to Church Street triple gabled, oversailing at foot of gables, central and right hand gables having each 2 leaded 2 light 2nd floor casements above 2 1st floor 4 light leaded, mullioned and transomed casements beneath heavy cornice heads. Similar left hand gable but windows on 1st floor combined into single easement. Modern ground floor shop windows under small cornice. Generally similar south front of 2 bays (and with stuccoed extension westwards of 3 windows now listed separately as No 2 White Hart Street). Welsh slated roof. Interior retains, from 1st floor upwards, a C16 or early C17 newel staircase with turned balusters. Formerly The Old Chequers Inn (B1).
John Juson innkeeper of the Chequers issued trade tokens in the 17th century. Shops still standing (1967) at the corner of White Hart Street and Church Street contain some of the original fabric of the Chequers. Further detail (B2).
The building was occupied for over eighty years from 1870, by Dring's outfitters and linen drapery. The historic building was allowed to decay in the sixties, and was later demolished and replaced by a modern replica (B3).
