Description
Chesham Gas Company gasworks shown on 1st Edition 25-inch OS map and on subsequent 25-inch and 6-inch OS maps. Works expanded to north by 1898-1900, gas holders removed after 1963 and most of buildings on original site apparently demolished after 1976. Northern part of site still in use as a gas distribution centre (B1).
The Gas Works were erected in 1847 (B2).
The gas company formed and operated as the Chesham & District Gas Co from 1846-1944. In 1935 control passed to Associated Gas & Water Undertakings Ltd. Gas production at Chesham ceased in 1939 on provision of a bulk gas supply from elsewhere. Vested in the Eastern Gas Board from the Chesham and District Gas Company. Nothing visible survives (B3).
