Description
Gasworks shown on 1877 1:500 OS map and on subsequent 25-inch and 6-inch OS maps. Last shown on National Grid Provisional Edition revised OS map of 1964-1970 (B1).
The Gas Works, situated at Hale Leys, close to the Railway Station, were established in 1834, by a company of shareholders. [In 1862] The works contain two gasometers, holding 19,800 cubic feet of gas, and a third gasometer has lately been erected. Mr Thomas Field is the manager of these works. The town clock is lighted gratuitously by the company (B2).
The Aylesbury Gas Co. was formed in 1834. Taken over by the UK Gas Corporation in 1935. Vested in the Southern Gas Board from the Aylesbury Gas Company. Coal gas was made using horizontal and vertical retorts. In 1956, gas making at Aylesbury ceased. The gasworks were demolished 1956-57 following completion of a gas main from Oxford to Aylesbury. Nothing visible survives (B3).
