Description

United District Gas Co gasworks shown on 1879 1:500 OS map. By 1923 it had expanded south to Ford Street, and is last shown on National Grid 6-inch Provisional edition OS map of 1955-62 (B1).
The Gas Board sold the site to Coopers in the 1960s and by 1972 the site had become an engineering works. Prior to redevelopment in 2006, the site comprised a large warehouse type workshop, a two storey car showroon and offices. A watching brief carried out by AS&C in January 2006 established that the site appears to have been unoccupied until the construction of the gasworks in the 19th century. Underneath about 1m of modern demolition debris, a 1.5m thick alluvial silt deposit overlay a black organic layer 0.3m thick, probably a semi-submerged flood plain deposit (B2).
The Gas Works, located on the London road, were erected in 1834, and enlarged in 1859. [In 1862] There are two gasometers, which hold 20,000 cubic feet of gas (B3).
Established in 1834 and operated as the Buckingham Gas Co. It was sold to the Buckingham & Oxford District Gas & Coke Co in 1907. The gasworks were rebuilt in 1912. Control passed to the United District Gas Company in 1913. In 1949 the undertaking was vested in Southern Gas Board. The gasholder station was taken out of use in 1957. Nothing visible survives, site now residential development (B4).
