Monument record 0943800000 - N of Abbey Cottages

Camp for detatchment of Czechoslovak Army acting as Presidential Guard for President Benes from October 1940. Soldiers were selected from the various companies of the Czechoslovakian army based at Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, for a 3-week stay at Aston Abbotts. Initially accommodation was in tents until Nissen and wooden huts were built in January 1941. The wooden huts were demolished in 1945 but 2 of the Nissen huts remain on the site (B1).

Three Second World War rectangular military buildings are visible on historic aerial photographs and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Aston Abbotts village about 225 metres WSW of The Abbey and centred at SP 84315 19944, the three rectangular buildings appear to be of the curved corrugated iron Nissen type and each about 12 metres x 5 metres. Two are aligned N-S and one W-E. The buildings remained extant in 2003, but by 2010 it would appear that two have been demolished and replaced by two new wooden, pitched-roof buildings, using the footprint of the original military buildings Only one original hut now survives on aerial photographs taken in (2-5).
