Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Surrey County Archaeological Unit in February 2006 in advance of proposed residential development recorded a sequence of fluvial deposits, possibly representing a prehistoric palaeochannel or over-bank deposits, associated with the adjacent River Thames. A layer of fluvial silty clay at least 0.9m thick contained worked flint, a fragment of red deer antler, charcoal and mollusc shell towards the base of the layer. 29 worked flints were recovered, all fresh and unrolled, but many had traces of tufa concretion, indicating that they were not in-situ. There was no signs of disturbance caused by the building of Brunel's railway bridge in 1838. See report for detail (B1).
