Description

In 1835 the Union Workhouse was built on Stratford Road. A stone building, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, it cost £8,215 and could accommodate 135 papers. An isolation Fever Ward was added in the grounds about 30 years later, and a Board Room and 'Casual Ward' added in 1898, near the entrance gates. The workhouse was demolished in the 1970s (B1).

Designed by George Gilbert Scott in the early conventional 'square' plan. The expenditure was authorised by the Poor Law Commissioners in June 1836. Buiding record file held at NMR (Ref no.101670)(B6).
