Description
Glebe terrier of 1639 records that the Vicarage House, a building of 7 bays, was moated. Outbuildings included a barn of 4 bays, a stable and a cowhouse (each of 1 bay), there was a meadow, orchard and gardens next to the churchyard and glebeland at various locations (B2).
'The Old Vicarage' is on the site refered to in the Glebe Terriers, also shown as 'Vicarage' on the 1st edition 6-inch OS map. A broad depression is visible following the inside of the property boundary on the north and west side of the house: there id little boubt that this is the infilled moat refered to in the 1639 terrier. A moated vicarage is slightly unusual, suggesting that the site may once have been more important, perhaps a manor or sub-manor (B3).
NGR to 'The Old Vicarage'.
