Description
Thurstan son of Rolf holds (Great) Missenden from Walter [Giffard]. It answers for 10 hides. Land for 8 ploughs; in lordship 2. 9 villagers with 1 smallholder have 6 ploughs. 2 slaves; meadow for 2 ploughs; woodland, 500 pigs; and from the returns of the woodland, 4 ora a year. The total value is and was £4; before 1066 £7. Sired son of Aelfeva, a thane of King Edward's, held this manor; he could sell (B1).
NGR to centre of village.
From the evidence of the foundation and confirmation charters of 1133 for Missenden Abbey, Great Missenden barely existed as a nucleated settlement. Within 100 years, however, the picture is very different with substantial development probably instituted by the local landlord (B2,B5).
