Description
'Pit 'shown on 1st edition 6-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 24, surveyed 1879); 'Old Gravel Pit' shown on 1st edition 25-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 24.3, surveyed 1879); also shown on 6-inch OS map (revised 1930) and 1:10,000 OS map (surveyed 1978) (B1).
The gravel pit and associated earthworks survive as visible remains (B2).
A post-medieval gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located on a hillslope above former Valley Farm and centred at SP 89708 25227, the irregularly shaped extraction site is about 3,330 square metres in area and is shown as an ‘old gravel pit’ on the 1881 1st edition OS map. Visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946, the pit appears to remain extant in 2019 (3-6).
