Description
'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 24, SURVEYED 1879); 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 24.6, SURVEYED 1879) [B1]
A post-medieval gravel pit is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the Recreation Ground in Wing village and centred at SP 88324 22532, the irregularly shaped extraction pit covers about 6,707 square metres in area. Recorded on the 1880- dated 1st edition OS map, but not on the 2nd edition, the infilled remains of the pit are only visible on remote sensing data as extremely slight and subtle earthworks that are not visible on aerial photographs taken in 2024 (2-5).
