Description

'GRAVEL PIT' SHOWN ON 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 24.9, SURVEYED 1879) [B1]

A post medieval gravel pit is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as an earthwork and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on a field boundary about 170 metres SW of Mount Pleasant Farm and centred at SP 87266 23734, a slightly subcircular gravel pit, recorded on the 1880 1st Edition OS map, is about 17.5 metres in diameter at its widest and 196 square metres in area. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the extractive pit remains visible (2-5).
