Description
'Sand Pit' shown on 6-inch OS 1st edition (Bucks sheet 20, surveyed 1885); 25-inch OS 1st edition (Bucks sheet 20.13, surveyed 1880); and 6-inch OS (surveyed 1930) (B1).
A post medieval sand pit is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field NE of Stewkley village and centred at SP 85924 26887, the irregularly shaped extraction pit is about 1473 square metres in area and is shown on the 1881 1st edition OS map. This is part of a large cluster of extractive pits that may have been created to provide raw material for Stewkley’s brickmaking industry, for which there are at least two kiln sites close by. Visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1944, the pit appears to have been filled in and levelled by 2019 (2-4).
