Description
'Gravel Pit' shown on 6-inch OS 1st edition (Bucks sheet 20, surveyed 1885); 'Sand Pit' shown on 25-inch OS 1st edition (Bucks sheet 20.13, surveyed 1880); 6-inch OS (surveyed 1930) and 1:10,000 OS (surveyed 1978) (B1).
A post medieval sand pit is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field NE of Stewkley village and centred at SP 85414 27109, the irregularly shaped extraction pit is about 4050 square metres in area and is shown as an ‘old sand pit’ on the 1881 1st edition OS map. It is cut into medieval ridge and furrow cultivation and so post-dates this. This is part of a large cluster of extractive pits that may have been created to provide raw material for Stewkley’s brickmaking industry, for which there are at least two kiln sites close by. Visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1944, the pit appears to have been filled in and levelled by 2019 (2-4).
