Description
'Pit' shown on 6-inch OS 1st edition (Bucks sheet 20, surveyed 1885); 'Sand Pit' shown on 25-inch OS first edition (Bucks sheet 20.13 surveyed 1880); and on 6-inch OS (surveyed 1930) (B1).
Three parallel linear post medieval sand pits are visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and were mapped as part of the North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18304). Located in a field NE of Stewkley village and centred at SP 85418 27274, the linear parallel and irregularly shaped extraction pits are aligned SW-NE and 118, 76 and 134 metres long. These are shown on the 1881 1st edition OS map. They are cut into a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation and the pits are cut along the contours of the furrows. These are part of a large cluster of extractive pits that may have been created to provide raw material for Stewkley’s brickmaking industry, for which there are at least two kiln sites close by. Visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1944, the pit appears to have been filled in and levelled by 2019 (2-4).
