Description

'Pit' shown on 1st edition 6-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 34, surveyed 1880); 'Chalk Pit' shown on 1st edition 25-inch OS map (Bucks sheet 34.10, surveyed 1880) (B1).

Two large chalk pits of post medieval date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 80m north of Beacon Hill House, Halton, and centred at SP 88122 09463. These pits are located within the boundaries of RAF Halton and are cut in to solid geology of Melbourne Rock Member – Chalk, which is used for Clunch, a local building stone. It is marked as ‘Old Chalk Pit’ on the Epoch 1 Ordnance Survey map. The area shows as woodland on the 1946 aerial photograph, with the RAF camp developing around them; modern aerial photographs show the area is still wooded. (2-6)
