Description

'PIT' SHOWN ON 6IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 34, SURVEYED 1880); 'CHALK PIT' SHOWN ON 25IN OS 1ST EDITION (BUCKS SHEET 34.11, SURVEYED 1880) [B1]

A chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 150m east of Southpark House, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89990 08746. Cut in to solid geology of Lewes Nodular Chalk, mainly used for flint and lime, and measuring 30x23m at its largest and is wooded in the 1940s and on modern aerial photographs. (2-4)
