Description

A chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 600m south west of Aston Hill Farm, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89875 09769. The pit is sub circular and measures approximately 15m across in the corner of a field; it is cut in to Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for clunch, flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows grassland with trees and modern land use is the same. It lies within the boundaries of the Dancersend SSSI, notified in 1951 for unimproved chalk grassland, scrub, regenerating woodland and plantations. (2-6)
